Coat of arms of the Faroe Islands

The coat of arms shown here of the Home Government of the Faroe Islands is in use since 2004. It shows a blue shield, on which is a ram ( veðrur ).

Aries is the heraldic animal of the Faroes, as the name probably originally called Sheep Islands. At least dominate the sheep as a pet the country. The current coat of arms goes back to an Aries Coat of Arms on the pews of Kirkjubøur from the 15th century.

The Løgting also had a seal with the ram as an emblem. This coat of arms was abolished with the dissolution of Løgtings 1816. Even after his resettlement in 1852 and even during the high degree of sovereignty during the British occupation of the Faroe Islands in World War II, it did not come into use again.

Only the Autonomy Law of 1948 established the Office of the Løgmaður again. This started off in 1950 as the ram emblem. Since 2004 there is the blue coat of arms shown here according to the historical model. The blue of the shield corresponds to the blue of the Merkið, the national flag.

The coat of arms is led by the Prime Minister, the government and the embassies abroad. Some government agencies use but still the old coat of arms.
