David Pryor

David Hampton Pryor ( born August 29, 1934 in Camden, Arkansas ) is an American politician (Democratic Party). He was between 1975 and 1979 Governor of Arkansas and represented this state in both chambers of Congress.

Early years and political rise

David Pryor attended the local schools of his home and the Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia. He then studied at the University of Arkansas, where he earned a regular diploma in 1957. In 1964, he passed from his law exams also. In the meantime, he worked from 1957 and 1961 in the newspaper industry by founding the newspaper " Quachita Citizen " and published.

Between 1961 and 1966, Pryor was a deputy in the House of Representatives from Arkansas before he belonged to the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington from 1967 to 1972. In 1974 he was elected as a candidate of his Democratic Party as the new governor of Arkansas. He had to prevail against, among others ex-governor Orval Faubus himself within the party.

Governor of Arkansas

Pryor's tenure as governor began January 14, 1975 and ended after a successful re-election in 1976 on January 3, 1979, his resignation because he had won a seat in the U.S. Senate. A major concern of his government was the revision of the Constitution of Arkansas. The thrust but inside politically strong resistance and planned by the Commission for constitutional reform was only in 1979, after the end of his term, to convene. Pryor also appointed many African Americans and women in government bodies and tried to sound fiscal policy. It was also created with the State Natural and Cultural Heritage Department, a new ministry.

He was Dean of the Clinton School of Public Service, which is part of the University of Arkansas in late 2003. David Pryor is married to Barbara Jean Lunsford, with whom he has three sons, including Mark Pryor holding the former seat of his father in the U.S. Senate since 2003.
