East Germany at the 1968 Winter Olympics
The GDR participated in the 1968 Olympic Winter Games in Grenoble for the first time with its own delegation in part and finished 10th in the medal standings. The East German team consisted of 57 athletes, 45 men and 12 women. The luger Thomas Köhler was chosen as the flag bearer of the East German team for the opening ceremony. The GDR started doing the last time under the black-red- gold flag with white Olympic rings in the middle, as the team of the FRG. At the bobsled race was attended by no GDR athletes.

Biathlon
The biathletes had nothing to do with the output in singles. In the new relay competition they fought for an honorable 6th place.

Hockey
In the only Olympic -participation of a DDR team, the athletes reached from the power centers of Berlin, White Water, Crimmitschau and Rostock immediately the final round. There, however, they referred especially to the great powers of hockey partially defeats and high occupied without a point the last place. The intra- German duel was able to be made bearable with 2:4. In the overall standings of the Olympic tournament, this meant the 8th Place.

Figure skating
Gabi Seifert won a silver medal, thereby founding the later legendary reputation of protégés to Jutta Müller. For men, Jan Hoffmann, the youngest age of twelve male Olympian of all time, had its premiere.

Speed Skating
With only one starter of speed skating was represented at the weakest next to alpine skiing in the East German team. About 1500 m Ruth Budzisch - Schleiermacher managed a respectable 8th place.

Toboggan
The luge competition was overshadowed from the women's perspective of the GDR team lead by a scandal, as a result they threatened briefly with the immediate departure. The GDR 's women Ortrun Enderlein, Anna -Maria Müller and Angela Knösel were by three runs in the squares 1, 2 and 4 Shortly before the start of the third run of the Polish jury chairman Lucjan Świderski had carried out a random check and found that the runners had been heated by Enderlein's sleigh. This was banned since 1964 in accordance with the regulations of the International Association FIL as a time saving of about half a second can be achieved by heating. Enderlein, Müller and Knösel were subsequently disqualified by the jury. Who exactly was responsible for the heating of the runners could never be determined. The men, however, were able to win a complete set of medals in both decisions overall.

In a close competition on the normal hill Dieter Neuendorf despite missing 7th place at the end of only 1.3 points on the bronze medal. On the large hill Manfred mercury could still improve on fourth place after a 13th place in the first round.

All three DDR starters were better runners than Springer. So Andreas Kunz came after tenth place in jumping still on the bronze medal. Roland Weißpflog improved almost sensational from 29th place to 9th place, Karl -Heinz Luck succeeded after 20th place in jumping nor the 11th Place. The planned fourth starter Ralph Pöhland, certainly with medal hopes, fled just before the start of the games in the FRG.
