Handball

Both handball teams brought with them a medal. The gold medal of the men had it almost a sensational painting. After the team was able to qualify with some close results do not necessarily expected as group winners for the finals, the audience experienced a dramatic game. The East German team offered the seemingly clear favorite USSR Paroli, the halftime score undecided 10:10. Even after the regular time it was a draw, with the Soviet team equalized only 20 seconds before the end. In the following extension then chose a fine save by Wieland Schmidt the game and the GDR was Olympic champion. For women, it was enough for silver in 1976 in Montreal this time only for bronze, which they missed only by the poorer goal difference against Yugoslavia the silver medal. Medal winners were, among others, the couple Peter and Christina rust, the parents of Frank Rost, and Waltraud Kretzschmar, the mother of Stefan Kretzschmar.
