East Germany at the 1984 Winter Olympics

The GDR participated in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo with a delegation of 56 athletes (40 men and 16 women ) participated and was in accordance with the medal table the most successful nation. On ice hockey and alpine skiing disciplines in the no GDR athletes participated.

Ski Jumping

1984 was the year of Jens Weißflog. Around the turn of the year 1983/84 he had already won the Four Hills Tournament. Together with Matti Nykänen he determined the competitions, won on the normal hill, while on the large hill he let Nykänen precedence. In the shadow of Weißflog were particularly impressed by Stefan Stannarius, the past scraped on the normal hill just short of the bronze medal.

Medals by sport

20 of 24 medals were won by athletes runners. The two ski jumping medals were the last Olympic medals for East Germany in the classic Nordic ski disciplines.

Due mostly to the highly successful bobsledder who all came from Oberhof, which ASK medal richest sports club was. Compared to just five Olympians, the SC Einheit Dresden was the most successful. Four times gold and silver were brought to the Elbe.
