Échay

Échay is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Échay is located on 340 m above sea level. M., about 23 km south of the city of Besançon (air line). The farming village in the Jura extends slightly increased on the left ( north-west ) side of the valley of Lison north of the height of the Montbergeret.

The area of ​​5:49 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The area is traversed by southwest to northeast from Lison in tortuous course. The valley is about one kilometer wide and is in the range of Échay an extension. It is flanked on both sides by about 100 m high slopes, crowned at the top edge at certain points of a rock band. To the southeast, the forest height is Montbergeret (up to 430 m above sea level. M. ). To the northwest, the municipality's area extends to the adjacent, mostly forested plateau on which 454 m above sea level. M. the highest elevation of Échay is achieved.

Neighboring communities of Échay are Point and Villers Cussey -sur- Lison in the north, Lizine in the east, the south and muon Bartherans and Montfort in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Échay formed part of the feudal rule Montmahoux, which was under the lords of Chalon. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

The building La Teru was built in the 16th century in the Renaissance style and has a stair tower. The old town is characterized by different farmhouses in the characteristic style of the Franche -Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries. On Lison is a mill.

Population

With 121 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Échay is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 155 persons were still counted ), a slight population growth was recorded since the late 1990s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Échay was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises. Many workers are also commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road, leading from Épeugney by Salins- les- Bains. Further road links exist with Bartherans and Montfort.
