École-Valentin

Ecole- Valentin is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Ecole- Valentin is at 290 m, about 5 km north- west of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the gently undulating countryside between the rivers of Doubs ( in the south) and Ognon ( in the north), north of the Fort of Montboucons.

The area of ​​3.22 km ² municipal area includes a section south of the Ognon. The main part of the area is occupied by the plateau which connects north to the Doubs Valley and is on average 290 m. The non- populated area is partly consisted of arable and meadow land, partly by forest. The plateau is flanked to the south by the ridge of the fort of Montboucons on which runs the southern border. To the east, the municipality's area extends into the Grove Bois de la Laye, and to the western foothills of the ridge of the Grande Côte, at 383 meters the highest point of Ecole- Valentin is achieved. The northern part of the municipality Ecole-Valentin extends into the headwaters of the Ruisseau des Moulins (inflow of Ognon ).

The double municipality consists of the villages of École west of the main road N57 and Valentin east of it. Neighboring communities of Ecole- Valentin are Miserey - Salines and Châtillon -le- Duc in the north, east and south, and Besançon Pirey in the West.

History

Is first mentioned École in 1326 under the name Escole. In the course of time the spelling on Acole (1331 ) and Esch Olle ( 1352) to the present name changed. Already in 1120, Valentin is busy as Vallanin writing. Then are Valantin ( 1143 ), Valentino ( 1245 ) and handed down since 1355 Valentin. In the Middle Ages, were the two villages of the supremacy of Besançon. Together with the Franche -Comté they came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Effective as of January 1, 1973 and merged Ecole Valentin to today's double municipality. Since then experienced Ecole-Valentin, a strong growth and development for the suburban community of Besançon.

Attractions

The octagonal building of the church Saint -Georges in École was built in 1892-1893 on the site of an earlier church. A special feature of the choir is not as usual oriented to the east, but to the north. The building complex of the mission house, which served as a seminary, orphanage, home of the Red Cross and as a private school in succession, dates from the years 1816 and 1817. Next to it is the Château du Saint -Esprit, which was built in 1557-1559 and has a Renaissance façade.

Population

With 2321 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) École- Valentin is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the department of Doubs. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the range between 300 and 380 people, a striking population growth was recorded since the early 1960s. Since then, the population has increased almost tenfold. Today, the settlement area of Ecole- Valentin has grown together with the outer districts of Besançon.

Economy and infrastructure

Ecole- Valentin was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village.
