Eikev
Ekev (Hebrew "Follow " or " reward" ) refers to a reading section of the Torah with the text of Deuteronomy / Devarim 7.12 to 11.25.
This is the reading of the 3rd or 4th Sabbath in the month of Av.
Gist
The text continues the exhortation for the people of Israel. The covenant with God will be continued in observance of the divine commandments. The Canaanites are to be expelled from Palestine. There is no legal claim to the land of Canaan. It is reminiscent of the sinfulness of the worship of the Golden Calf and the events of the renewal of the covenant at Sinai. Israel is exhorted to fear God and God's love. Keeping the commandments will be rewarded with fertile rain.
Haftorah
The associated Haftarah is Isaiah 49.14 to 51.3.
