History

" The Salmen Yssensmyt uff " is iron Schmitt in 1372 as first mentioned. The yield of iron ore resources, the extraction of charcoal in the surrounding forests for the operation of the furnaces and the possibility of smelting by the water power of the Salm were large enough to operate long term ironworks. This in turn caused the settlement of smelter workers, and thus the formation and enlargement of a village.

Beginning in 1794, iron Schmitt under French rule, 1815, the place on the Congress of Vienna was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia. In 1835, iron Schmitt had approximately 1,350 inhabitants, the largest number in its history. Later in the 19th century came the end of the iron industry in the Salm Valley, due to new production processes and more productive and larger plants in the industrial areas of the Lower Rhine and Ruhr, which also could work with the cheaper coal instead of charcoal.

Since 1946, iron Schmitt is part of Rhineland- Palatinate then newly founded.

The name Iron Schmitt

The name "Iron Schmitt " comes from the now discontinued iron industry, which has its origins in the 14th century. In Latin sources the place appears variously as " Ferrifodina " and in French as "La Schmitt ". The dialectal name is still " de Butterfly ". The ironworks Eichelhütte was founded in 1701.

The Gemerke with the intertwined letters " I" and " S" stands for Isen- Schmitt, the old iron Schmitter Hut brand from the 16th century. The colors red and silver are the colors Malberger to their rule iron Schmitt until the end des18. Century belonged. The rafter beams in the first field is taken from the coat of arms of the noble lords of Manderscheid ("In gold, a red zigzag beam ( rafter beams ) " ) and indicates the membership of the former County of Manderscheid. In the second field are hammer and tongs. They are symbols of the centuries- long existing iron industry from which the town got its name.

" The Weiberndorf "

The place Schmitt iron was the writer Clara Viebig (1860-1952) as a template for her novel The Weiberndorf, which describes life in the small town of Eifel Schmitt. Background of the novel is a feature of the village community: Due to the dwindling commodity iron ore in the area of iron Schmitt the able-bodied men were in the late 19th century to guest workers in the Ruhr. They earned a living for themselves and their families in the emerging steel mills. What remained were the women who had during the long absence of their men all work in house and field alone do - hence the name of the novel The Weiberndorf. The description of these states was perceived by many contemporaries as scandalous, but the women took a role that was not a common practice at that time.

Scenes from the novel are represented on the village fountain in front of the church.

Since June 2005, the Clara - Viebig center in iron Schmitt recalls the writer.
