Elias Carr

Elias Carr ( born February 25, 1839 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina; † July 22, 1900 ibid ) was the 48th Governor of North Carolina.

Youth and political rise

Elias Carr visited the Oaks School and the University of Virginia. After his participation in the American Civil War, he was a farmer and very soon a political advocate for the interests of agriculture. In 1887 he attended a meeting of the farmers of North Carolina in part ( State Farmers Convention ). As early as 1886 he was a delegate to a national convention of the American farmer.

Governor of North Carolina

As a member of the Democratic Party, he was nominated in 1892 for the governorship. He managed to win the elections. His four-year term began on January 18, 1893 and ended on 12 January 1897. During this time, the budget for state universities has been increased. A prison reform was initiated and the road network in the country was further expanded.

Retirement

After the end of his tenure, Carr retired from politics, but still remaining loyal to agriculture and its problems and interests. He died on 22 July 1900. He was married to Elenor Kearney, with whom he had six children.
