David Settle Reid

David Settle Reid ( born April 19, 1813 Rockingham County, North Carolina, † June 19, 1891 ) was an American politician and the 32th Governor of North Carolina. This State, he also represented in both houses of Congress.

Early years and political rise

David Reid attended the local schools of his home. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1833. A year later he began to practice law in Wentworth.

From 1835 to 1842 the Democrat Reid was a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina. Between 1843 and 1847 he represented his state in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. His party nominated him for the 1848 gubernatorial elections; yet he was subject, however, almost the Whig Charles Manly, who received 854 votes more.

Governor of North Carolina

Two years later, he managed to Manly but with nearly 2900 votes to beat distance and to become self- elected governor; In 1852 he was confirmed in that office by the voters. His term began on January 1, 1851 and ended on December 5, 1854. Most important event of his tenure was the adoption of the compiled by U.S. Senator Henry Clay in 1850, the Compromise of 1850 by North Carolina. The compromise relaxed for a short time, the political differences between the North and South. Reid sat down for a further expansion of the education system in his state, and advocated electoral reform, but this was not implemented parliament. In December 1854 he was appointed by the House of Representatives in the U.S. Senate. For this reason, he resigned as governor on December 5.

Another Journey

Between 1854 and 1859 Reid sat as a senator in Congress. In 1861 he was a delegate to a peace conference in Washington that would prevent civil war in the last minute. After the failure of the conference, he was at the convention in North Carolina, where the secession was decided. In the following years he worked as a lawyer. Politically, he only appeared once in 1875 in appearance, when he was a delegate to a convention to revise the Constitution of North Carolina.

David Reid died in 1891. He was married to Henrietta Settle, the couple had three children.
