Eugène Christophe

Eugène Christophe ( also le Vieux Gaulois, French for: the old Gauls, born January 22, 1885 in Paris, † February 1, 1970 ) was a French cyclist.

1910 Christophe won the Sanremo cycling classic Milan. In 1919 he was the first of the yellow jersey in the Tour de France. Christophe was not excited about it because it was the bright yellow too flashy.

In first place lying, suffered his bike in the Tour de France 1913 in the Pyrenees in the descent of the Col du Tourmalet a fork breakage. To fix it, he had to walk 14 km to the nearest forge, in which he was not allowed to get help. Through the walk and the repair he lost more than two hours. Nevertheless, he got a penalty, as a boy worked the bellows for him. According to tradition, he commented on this penalty, with unprintable expressions. He was seventh overall, he got his nickname after this race. Also in 1919 ended a fork break his hopes of victory. He came seventh this year in third place.
