The first Euro Vision Song Contest was held on 24 May 1956 in Lugano, Switzerland, at that time under the title Gran Premio della Canzone Europea € Visione. The evening was hosted by the Swiss television presenter Lohengrin Filipello; he was the only male solo so far moderator of the competition.

Each of the seven registered countries could submit two titles, this one or different performers could come. The United Kingdom, Denmark and Austria missed the registration deadline of the European Broadcasting Union. Language rules did not exist; it was the unwritten law to sing in the local language. Occurrence were only allowed soloists.

Switzerland and Luxembourg presented only one singer for both songs as occurred for the other countries each two performers or performers. Half of the songs were sung in French; mainly it was called chansons. At that time in youth popular music styles such as rock and roll Calypso or did not occur.
