Georges Delerue

Georges Delerue ( born March 12, 1925 in Roubaix, † March 20, 1992 in Los Angeles ) was a French film composer. From his film scores come to more than 300 feature films.

Career

Delerue studied at the Paris Conservatory under the guidance of Darius Milhaud. In 1949 he was awarded the Prix de Composition as well as the Prix de Rome. In 1952 he was appointed composer and head of the French Radio Orchestra.

From the late 1950s, Delerue, he focused on composing film music. During his work he covered a wide range of film genres. Earlier in his career he worked closely with François Truffaut ( The Soft Skin, The American Night ). But other directors of the French Nouvelle Vague sought to working with him, as Jean -Luc Godard for his film Contempt, Alain Resnais, Louis Malle, and Bernardo Bertolucci.

The success of directors helped Delerue for his own international breakthrough, and 1969 was the composer his first Oscar nomination for the film score for Charles Jarrotts historical drama Queen of the Thousand Days. In 1972 he started at various Hollywood productions collaborate. 1983 was directed by Mike Nichols, the film Silkwood. 1986 conducted Delerue the piece " Adagio for Strings " by Samuel Barber for Oliver Stone's Platoon and composed the score for the 1991 movie Black Robe - By the river of the Iroquois.

1980 won Delerue for his music to George Roy Hill's A Little Romance movie the Oscar for Best Music. Four other times he was nominated for an Oscar. From 1979 to 1981 he won three times in a row, the French César film award. Twice Delerue was nominated in the course of his career for a Golden Globe.

Although Delerues principal work was the soundtrack, but was not limited to this. In addition, he also composed orchestral works and chamber music for the concert hall and stage works, such as the opera Ariane (1954 ), Le chevalier de neige (1961 ), Medis et Alysio (1974) and the music for the ballet La Leçon by Flemming Flindt ( 1963).

Georges Delerue died on March 20, 1992 in Los Angeles eight days after his 67th birthday.
