Grande-Synthe

Grande- Synthe ( Dutch: Groot- Sinten ) is a commune with 20,933 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Nord, in the Nord -Pas -de -Calais. It belongs administratively to the Arrondissement Dunkerque, is the capital of the eponymous canton Grande -Synthe and member of the Association of Municipalities Dunkerque Grand Littoral.

Geography

It is a port city on the southern North Sea coast (at the eastern end of the English Channel ) in the historic West-Flemish -speaking region French Flanders. Grande -Synthe is surrounded to the west and east by districts of Dunkirk ( Dunkerque ). Southwest are Loon -Plage and Craywick, south Spycker the community and to the southeast Armbouts -Cappel.

Traffic

Through the community Autoroute A16 from Paris to Amiens and Abbeville leads to Dunkerque and on to Bruges in Belgium. In the southeast of the community, the interchange is with the Route nationale 225, which leads to the Autoroute A25. The train station of Grande-Synthe is located on the railway line from Calais to Dunkerque.

History

How can Dunkerque Grande -Synthe show their mention in the 7th century. 648 is a small village near the sea. The Benedictine start early with the draining of the area.

It was not until 1830, the population exceeds the threshold of 1,000 inhabitants. With the wars of 1870/71, the first and second world war, the population goes back each significantly and drops below the limit. Since the 1950s, the population begins but then to rise until it reaches its peak with more than 26,000 inhabitants in the early 1980s. Since then, the population has been declining again. Due to the increase in population was the settlement of industrial companies at the port facilities.
