Zuytpeene

Zuytpeene, Dutch Winnezele, is a commune with 545 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Nord, in the Nord -Pas -de -Calais. It belongs to Arrondissement Dunkerque, in the canton of Cassel and the community association Pays de Cassel. In Zuytpeene West Flemish is spoken.

Geography

The municipality is located in Zuytpeene French Flanders in the far north of France, about 30 kilometers south of Dunkerque and 15 kilometers northeast of Saint- Omer. In the southwest of the municipality borders the Pas- de -Calais. The mostly flat area of ​​the municipality is crossed by the river Peene Becque and some smaller streams ( Zuytpeene, Lyncke Becque ).

In addition to the closed settlement pattern of the village core are numerous scattered individual farms in the municipality of Zuytpeene. Characteristic of Zuytpeene and environment is intensive farming and the lack of forest areas.

Neighboring communities of Zuytpeene are Wemaers -Cappel in the north, Cassel in the northeast, Bavinchove the southeast, ready to live in the southwest, Noordpeene in the west and Ochtezeele in the northwest.

History

Zuytpeene was on April 11, 1677 the scene of the Battle of Cassel (French: Bataille de la Peene ) in the context of the Dutch War between the Netherlands and France, which ended in a French victory. An obelisk on the road to Cappel commemorates this event.

Folklore and Carnival

The Géants de Zuytpeenee ( German: Giants of Zuytpeene ) are in northern France and in neighboring Belgium widespread traditional feasts on giant figures ( Géants du Nord ). Since 2005, the performances by UNESCO under the title processions of giants and dragons from Belgium and France are listed as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Figures from Zuytpeene called Thomas le Mousquetaire ( Thomas the Musketeer, since 1999) and Adélaïde ( since 2006). The figure of Thomas goes back to Thomas Joseph Auguste de Liot Nortbécourt who was musketeer of the King to the French Revolution.

Transport links

Zuytpeene is a little out of the national traffic flows, but is connected by a good network of roads in all directions with the surrounding towns and cities. Through the municipal area the railway line leading from Dunkerque to Lille ( with stops in the neighboring municipality Bavinchove ). Just south parallel the LGV Nord from Paris to the Euro Tunnel.
