Hamarøy

Hamarøy is a commune in the province of Nordland in Northern Norway.

The municipality has an area of 1,031 square kilometers and less than 2,000 inhabitants. The administrative center is called Oppeid.

Culture

In the district Hamsund is the same court, the parents of Knut Hamsun lived since 1862 and where the poet, who chose his surname to the court, was formative childhood experiences. The house, at that time consisting of only the three northern axes was later extended twice south on seven axes and made 2007 the outbuildings of a listed building. It now houses a branch of the Salten Museum.

In the district Oppeid the farm Skogheim, the Hamsun 1911-1917 is inhabited. The main building was expanded in the 1920s to the north about two axes and increased. It now contains a memorial room Hamsun.

The Hamsun Centre is a house of literature and documentation center about the writer Knut Hamsun. It lies on the banks of the river Glimma in Preisteid. The award-winning tower building was designed by the American architect Steven Holl and is open to the public since summer 2010.
