The Harlem Township is one of 18 townships in Stephenson County in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Illinois.
Geography
The Harlem Township is located north-west of Illinois, approximately 20 km south of the Wisconsin border. The Mississippi River, which forms the border with Iowa, is located about 70 km to the west.
The Harlem Township is located at 42 ° 20'15 " north latitude and 89 ° 41'48 " west longitude and extending over 81.58 km ², spread over 81.32 km ² land and 0.26 km ² water surface. It is drained by the next Wisconsin Pecatonica River, a tributary of the Rock River.
The Harlem Township is located in the northwest suburban area of Freeport, the center of the region. It borders within the Stephenson County in the northwest of the Waddams Township, in the northeast on the Buckeye Township, on the east by the Lancaster Township, to the southeast by the city of Freeport, on the south by the Florence Township, to the southwest by the Loran Township and the west to the Erin Township.
Traffic
Through the Township into East-West direction of U.S. Highway 20, which is the shortest route from Dubuque in Iowa to Rockford in Illinois. Because of Highway 20 at the same time is the northern ring road of Freeport, branches in the center of Harlem Township from the west-north- west arterial road of the city. The western boundary of the Township is formed by the Illinois State Route 26, the northern exit road of Freeport. All other roads are County Roads and further subordinate and partly unpaved roadways.
In parallel to U.S. Highway 20 passes a railway line of the Canadian National Railway, which runs from Chicago to the west.
The nearest airport is around 15 km south-east of the township located Albertus Airport in Freeport.
Population
In the census in 2010, the township had 2275 inhabitants. The population lives in addition to scattered settlements mostly in the suburban area of the city of Freeport, without being legally belong to the city.
