Stephenson County, Illinois
The Stephenson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 47,711 inhabitants and a population density of 32.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Freeport.
Geography
The County is located in the extreme northern Illinois on the border of Wisconsin and has an area of 1463 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:
Traffic
By Stephenson County leads in west-east direction of the U.S. Highway 20, which is the shortest route from Dubuque in Iowa to Rockford and Chicago. Highway 20 is also the northern ring road of Freeport. The Illinois State Routs 26, 73 and 75 run through the County. All other roads are County Roads and further subordinate and partly unpaved roadways.
In parallel to U.S. Highway 20 passes a railway line of the Canadian National Railway, which runs from Chicago to the west.
The Albertus Airport is 7.5 km southeast of the city of Freeport.
History
The Stephenson County was formed on March 4, 1837 from parts of the Jo Daviess County and Winnebago County. It was named after Benjamin Stephenson (1769-1822), an early pioneer, politician and later Colonel of the territorial militia.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2010 lived in Stephenson County 47,711 people in 19,645 households. The population density was 32.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 19,645 households lived statistically 2.40 per person.
The racial the population was composed of 86.5 percent white, 9.0 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.6 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 2.5 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 2.9 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
22.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 58.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 18.8 percent were 65 years or older. 51.5 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was $ 43,304. The per capita income was $ 22,608. 14.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
