Stephenson County, Illinois

The Stephenson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 47,711 inhabitants and a population density of 32.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Freeport.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme northern Illinois on the border of Wisconsin and has an area of ​​1463 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

Traffic

By Stephenson County leads in west-east direction of the U.S. Highway 20, which is the shortest route from Dubuque in Iowa to Rockford and Chicago. History

The Stephenson County was formed on March 4, 1837 from parts of the Jo Daviess County and Winnebago County. It was named after Benjamin Stephenson (1769-1822), an early pioneer, politician and later Colonel of the territorial militia.
