Menard County (Illinois)

The Menard County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 12,705 inhabitants and a population density of 15.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Petersburg.

Geography

The County is located west of the geographic center of Illinois, and is drained by the Sangamon River, a left tributary of the Illinois River. It has an area of 817 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. At the Menard County borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Menard County was formed on 15 February 1839. It was named after Pierre Menard (1766-1844), a French pioneer and traders with Indians, who settled in Kaskaskia and later Colonel was the territorial militia. From 1818 to 1822 Menard was the first Lieutenant Governor of Illinois.

Abraham Lincoln lived here from 1831 to 1837 in New Salem, before moving to Springfield.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Menard County 12,705 people in 4959 households. The population density was 15.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 4959 households lived statistically 2.53 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 97.6 percent white, 0.9 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.0 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 1.1 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

22.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 61.3 percent were between 18 and 64 and 15.9 percent were 65 years or older. 51.3 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 56,943. The per capita income was $ 26,300. 7.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
