Scott County (Illinois)

The Scott County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 5355 inhabitants and a population density of 8.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Winchester.

Geography

The County is located in the west of Illinois on the left bank of the Illinois River. The Mississippi River, which forms the border with Missouri, is located around 60 km to the west; the border with Iowa runs about 100 km north-west.

History

The Scott County was formed on February 16, 1839, from the Morgan County.

The history of Scott County begins with the Native Americans who settled in this area. The area in 1673 was first explored by Europeans, as the Mississippi River came down Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette of Canada. The next Europeans may have been La Salle, who came via the southern route and began his expedition in 1682 and claimed the land for France in possession. 1762 Treaty of Fontainebleau between the French and the British was signed, which were all French possessions east of the Mississippi to the British.

The appropriation by white settlers began finally to 1817. At this time lived here for the last Kickapoo Indians, often referred to as Plains Indians. 1819 was the first known family from Kentucky to this area. It was the family of Thomas Stephens with six sons, the eldest three of them in addition to their own families.
