Gallatin County (Illinois)

The Gallatin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 5589 inhabitants and a population density of 6.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Shawneetown.

Geography

The County is located in the south- southeastern part of Illinois to the mouth of the Wabash River in Ohio, each of which forms the border with Indiana and Kentucky. It has an area of 851 square kilometers, of which twelve square kilometers of water surfaces. At the Gallatin County borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The first white settler was the gunsmith Michael Sprinkle, who settled here shortly before 1800 on the territory of today Shawneetown. The next settler was Alexander Wilson in 1802 with his family. 1808 or 1809 the small town of Shawneetown was then, after the influx of several other settlers who established and founded in 1812 a land office.

Was on 14 September 1812, the Gallatin County formed from former parts of Randolph County, was named after Albert Gallatin ( 1761-1849 ), a former U.S. Treasury Secretary ( 1801-1814 ).

At the same time it was discovered the first salt mines whose income were the most important commercial product in the following years until 1870. 1830 had the County already has a population of 7,400 people. The peak was in 1900 with nearly 16,000 inhabitants reached. After the final from the salt works, the numbers went up today back steadily to now just under 5,600 inhabitants.

The median income for a household was $ 34,319. The per capita income was $ 22,200. 19.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
