Macon County (Illinois)

The Macon County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 110 768 inhabitants and a population density of 73.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Decatur.

Geography

The County is located in the geographic center of Illinois. It has an area of 1516 square kilometers, of which 13 km ² water.

The county is drained by the Sangamon River, one of the main tributaries of the Illinois River. In the center of the county is the Lake Decatur, a reservoir of the Sangamon River.

History

The Macon County was formed on January 19, 1829. It was named for Nathaniel Macon, Colonel ( Colonel ) in the American Revolutionary War, politician and spokesman for the Republican politicians within the then Democratic-Republican Party, which wanted to limit the power of government and U.S. Senator from North Carolina. From 1830 to 1831 here lived the family of Abraham Lincoln. After that, his parents moved back to the Coles County, while he pursued his own career.
