Herr Christ, der einge Gottessohn, BWV 96
Lord Christ, the Son of God is ( BWV 96) is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He composed it in Leipzig for the 18th Sunday after Trinity, October 8, 1724.
Emergence and words
Bach wrote the cantata in 1724, his second cantata cycle, which was initially exclusively of chorale cantatas. The prescribed readings are 1 Corinthians 1:4-8 and Matthew 22.34-46 LUT LUT. The text of an unknown poet's based on the chorale in five stanzas Lord Christ, the son of Elizabeth Cruciger agree Gotts ( 1524). The first and the last verse were retained in the wording of the sentences 1 and 6 of the cantata, the verses 2 and 3 rewritten to the corresponding sets of stanza 4, two cantata movements.
Scoring and structure
The cantata is set for four soloists, soprano, alto, tenor and bass, four -part choir, flauto piccolo ( one sopranino, later replaced brook violino piccolo ), flauto traverso, two oboes, horn (later trombone), two violins, viola and basso continuo.
Music
In the opening chorus of Bach lets the cantus firmus sing the alto, amplified by a horn ( a trumpet in later performances ). An unusual flauto piccolo ( one sopranino in f2) is used to represent the light of the morning star. In a later performance, probably in 1734, was instead a violino piccolo used. The other voices are performed polyphonic and built into the orchestral writing, the themes of which they take part.
The tenor aria is accompanied by the flute, probably played by the player of the flauto piccolo in the first sentence. As for the cantata What I ask of the world, a few weeks earlier composed, seemed an excellent flutist to be available.
The bass aria illustrates the words soon to the right, now to the left, my errant step distracted by its figurative and the exchange between winds and strings. In the middle of uniform steps for Go stand still, my savior, with. The final section combines both elements.
The final chorale is four voices for the choir, horn, oboe and strings.
