Geography

The name derives from is "the Höhbeck " a saaleglazial incurred, up to 76 meters above sea level -rise moraine, which is as striking plate of Pleistocene gravel, sand and glacial till in the middle of the Holocene lowland Elbe Valley. Because of its natural environment and bio-geographical location - in the transition between the Atlantic and Continental regions of Central Europe - has the Höhbeck whose steeply sloping to the river Elbe slopes are forested, a particularly rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. Lean and xeric grasslands form a diverse contrast with forests, fields and waters rich lowlands of the Elbe and the Elbe tributary sea areas.

At the highest point of the moraine were until 2009 two of 324 and 344 meters high radio towers of the transmitter Höhbeck that dominate the landscape. On 20 August 2009, the smaller of the two towers was blown up.

History

The elevation of the Höhbeck with its location within the Elbe Valley was a settlement chamber, which was used for over 2000 years from the Neolithic Age to the early Iron Age settlements and burial grounds. This resulted in excavations of the Institute of Cultural Heritage in the 1960s. Occasion were chance finds from the Stone Age in the construction of a residential building in Pevestorf. The excavation led to the discovery of floor plans of houses of several prehistoric periods, including a rustic hall 23 meters in length. The findings revealed among other contexts to Bernburg culture.

Fortifications

789 built the franc against the Slavic Wilzen two castles made of wood and earth on bridges across the Elbe. The fact that this already is the Höhbeck - fort, is suspected, but can not be clearly prove. The " Vietz Lair" on the Höhbeck is addressed as a fort, which was built by Charlemagne in the early 9th century, according to Frankish annals. 808 it came to the installation of two forts on the Elbe by representatives of Charlemagne. In the year 810, the castle was destroyed Höhbeck on the Elbe, where Odo was staying as legate of the emperor. A year later testify to the Frankish annals recovery. On the steep northern bank of the Elbe a rectangular attachment of about 70 times 170 m size ( about 1.2 ha) has been preserved. To the west and south of the facility of a bank and ditch is protected. In the north and east did not only protect the steep slope, it can be also the course of the wall read in the field. Excavations were starting place in 1897 by Carl Schuchardt until 1964. After that lay to the west and south before the Wall a 2.8 m deep and about 9 m wide V-shaped ditch. The outside front of the 6 m wide rampart was held by strong round posts. In the south mullions were noted in the Wall, which were only half as dense as the front post. A fire resulted in the destruction of the attachment. Recognized that the south gate was restored as a two -wing building of 6 m width with a simple chamber. About an earlier Roman settlement, which precedes the Höhbeck - fort in time, shards were found along with late medieval finds Slavic, Saxon and "Western" origins dating back to around 800 A C14 dating from the fire layer yielded an age 885 plus / minus 80 AD BC ( according to Wachter). The unusual for the same area rectangular shape and the archaeological evidence, particularly the demonstrated Torerneuerung after fire destroyed, speak for an identification with the scale of the franc fort on the Höhbeck. It should serve as border security against the settled on the other side of the Elbe Slavs.
