Howard County (Maryland)

The Howard County is a county located in the U.S. state of Maryland. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ellicott City.

Geography

The County is located about halfway between Baltimore and Washington, DC and has an area of 657 square kilometers; these are four square kilometers ( 0.60 percent ) of water. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Howard County formed in 1851 from part of the Anne Arundel County. It was named for John Eager Howard (1752-1827), the first Governor of Maryland ( 1788-1791 ).

Demographic data

According to the census in 2010 lived in Howard County 287 085 people in 98 994 households. The population density was 439.6 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 62.2 percent white, 17.5 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 14.4 percent of Asians and other ethnic groups; 3.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 5.8 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. In the 98 994 households lived statistically 2.73 per person.

25.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 64.0 percent were 19-64, and 10.2 percent were 65 years or older. 50.7 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 101,417. The per capita income was $ 44,120. 4.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
