Humpolec

Humpolec ( German Humpoletz, 1939-1945 also Gumpolds ) is a city in the Czech Republic on the north western edge of the Bohemian- Moravian Highlands ( Czech -Moravian Vrchovina ) and lies south-east of Prague, about halfway to Brno. Humpolec has about 11,000 inhabitants. The city is a member of the microregion Zálesí.

History

Humpolec emerged as a guard square in the border area on the trade route from Prague to Moravia. The first written mention dates back to 1178th This year King Otakar I gave the place Soběslav II the city was taken over by the Teutonic Knights and was until 1325 the monastery Želiv, after the Order of the Cross with the Red Star. Other owners were nobles from Lipa and later of Dubé, of Leskovce and Říčan.

During the Hussite Wars, the area of the trailer Calixtins. On the nearby mountain Melechov the meetings were held. The poor area was severely punished by the military campaigns against the insurgents by Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg. After the Battle of White Mountain, the city was confiscated and came to the Lords of Solm. Subsequent owners were Kirchner, Guest Home, Metternich, Shelf, Delbína, Neffzern. Under the reign of the latter, the town experienced a boom, especially through the merit of Jacob of Neffzern who introduced the cultivation of potatoes here. Under the last owner, Count Wolkenstein Trostburg Humpolec in 1807 proclaimed for all time a free city.

During the revolution in 1848, a National Guard was founded; Roman envoy was Karel Havlicek Borovský. 1910, the district administration was established, which existed until 1960. In the 13th to 15th century silver was mined in the place, and since the 15th century is to place a cloth weaving, which is still active today. In the 19th century the city also Bohemian Manchester was called.
