Ibagué

Ibagué on the map of Colombia

Ibagué is a city in Colombia with 465 859 inhabitants ( Census 2005). It is the capital of the department of Tolima and is located about 140 kilometers west of Bogotá on the river Combeima.

The town was founded in 1550 named Andrés López de Galarza and after the chief Ibagué as Villa de San Bonifacio de Ibagué. In 1887 it became the capital of the Departamentes of Huila and only in 1910 after the cause of Departaments of Tolima to its capital.

Economy

Ibagués economic importance lies in the cultivation of rice and coffee as well as animal husbandry. The industry consists mainly of textile, leather processing and breweries. Another economic factor is tourism. The national park with three volcanoes, whose summits are covered with ice and snow, is attractive not only for climbers, but also for the residents of about 150 km distant Bogotá.

The city is the capital of Colombian music and celebrates this every year in June.

Sports

In Ibagué football club Deportes Tolima is located, the date was once Colombian champion and runner-up four times.
