Jork

York is a municipality in the district of Stade in Lower Saxony on the southwest border of Hamburg and the center of the old country, one of the largest fruit-growing areas in Europe.

Community structure

York is divided into seven districts: Jork, Borstel ( with Liihe ) Ladekop, Estebrügge, UK ( with Leeswig ), Hove and Moorende. At York include three parishes: Jork (St. Matthias ), Borstel (St. Nikolai ) and Estebrügge ( St. Martin ).

History

The place Jork was first mentioned in 1221. It developed in the period following the administrative center of the old country. 1885 York headquarters of the Prussian county York, which includes the City of Buxtehude and the community included new territory next to the Old Country. 1932 York lost the function of an administrative center, as the district dissolved and west of the Este district of Stade, was east of it connected to the district of Harburg. Since 1972 there is no longer even the district court Jork.

Today's unit town Jork was 1 July 1972 by the merger of seven formerly independent municipalities Borstel, Estebrügge, Hove ( until then in the district of Harburg), York, UK, Ladekop and Moorende (until then in the district of Harburg).

Jork Altes Land was the starting point for several new varieties of apple varieties. Thus, the Gloster 69 went as a cross between Glockenapfel and Richared in 1951 from a breeding at the local fruit-growing research institute Moorende of the state produced. Also found in Jamba in 1955 here its origin.

Parish council

In the local elections in September 2011, next to the municipal council and the mayor were elected. The nominated by civil society Jork candidate Gerd Hubert was elected by a narrow margin to the mayor.

Mayor

The new mayor Gerd Hubert ( BVJ ) is elected for eight years and took up his duties on 1 November 2011. He is a member of the council Yorker since 1986.

Coat of arms

Blazon: The coat of arms depicts a two-part shield. In the upper half are on a blue background two diagonally crossed silver gable boards that end in facing swan heads. In the bottom half is on silver, a red spade in the green sign foot, the spade is accompanied by two red oath hands. Was designed the coat of arms of the Jorker grew up in York painter and sculptor Carsten Eggers.

Structures

Throughout the Old Country feature well-preserved old half-timbered courtyards with magnificent gates the so-called Altländer gates. Along the vast fruit-growing areas and ( historical ) courts, which runs the Obstmarschenweg. Another tourist destination is located on a piece of sleeping dike mill in the district Borstel. These is the town hall - the so-called Gräfenhof - whose history can be traced back to the 12th century. In particular, the wedding room on the 1st floor is very good and authentically preserved.

In the district Moorende located with the Esteburg a mansion from the early 17th century. Near the dike are many old lighthouses, so in Twielenfleth, Liihe and Mielstack.

Personalities

1776 married in York writer Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and Eva King. To commemorate this, the Lessing- meetings are held at York since 1992, every year in November. The place was already repeatedly settings for weddings of celebrities, for example by Otto Waalkes and Elton.

  • Rudolf Welskopf, SPD, later member of the KPD in the Weimar Republic, a resistance fighter against the Nazi regime after 1945 in the GDR. Born on August 26, 1902 in Borstel, died on January 17, 1979 in East Berlin.
