Katav-Ivanovsk

Katav - Iwanowsk (Russian Катав - Ивановск ) is a city in Chelyabinsk Oblast (Russia) with 17,630 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located on the western flank of the Southern Urals about 320 km southwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Chelyabinsk at the Katav, a left tributary of the Kama Jurjusan in the river system.

Katav - Iwanowsk is the Oblast administratively subordinated directly and as the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The city is connected by a 37 km long branch line with Jurjusan and the station Wjasowaja ( 1818 line kilometers from Moscow) of the southern branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway Moscow - Samara Chelyabinsk - Omsk.

History

Katav - Iwanowsk arose in 1757 in connection with the establishment of ironworks Katav - Ivanovsky Zavod by the merchants Twerdyschew Ivan and Ivan Myasnikov, from whose name was the addition to the name of the river in the name of the factory and of the place. On 27 August 1939, the city received city rights.

Culture and sights

In the city there is since 1975 a local museum, which today is located on the former estate of the noble family Beloselsky -Belozersky, which belonged to the local forming iron from the late 18th to the late 19th century.
