Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park

The national park Khao Sam Roi Yot ( Thai: อุทยานแห่งชาติ เขา สาม ร้อย ยอด ) is a national park in the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan in the southern part of central Thailand. The park opened in 1966, is 98.8 square kilometers.

History

King Mongkut (Rama IV ), who was very interested in the natural sciences, invited on August 18, 1868 several guests to observe the solar eclipse computed by him in the area of today's national park of Khao Sam Roi Yot. The sun eclipsed in fact the calculated time, but won the monarch in the marshes malaria, where he died two weeks later.

Even later kings visited Sam Roi Yot, especially the Phraya Nakhon Cave. The cave is actually two caves, the larger of which is lit by a large hole in the ceiling impressive from sun rays. The national park Khao Sam Roi Yot was opened on 28 June 1966. On April 1, 1982, he was enlarged to its present size.

Geography

The name Khao Sam Roi Yot means Mountains with 300 peaks, which describes the landscape quite well. The rugged limestone hills rise up to 605 meters directly from the Gulf of Thailand. The western part of the park is approximately 36.8 square kilometers of freshwater marshes ( Thai: ทุ่ง สาม ร้อย ยอด ) taken. On the coast there are mangrove swamps.

In the park there are two beaches, Hat Laem Sala and the slightly larger Hat Sam Phraya near the park headquarters at Ban Khao Daeng.

In the park are still living individual specimens of rare goat -like Goral kind with English common names " Mainland Serow " ( Nemorhaedus sumatraensis ), the cynomolgus monkey and the Southern Brillenlanguren populate the beach and the area around the park headquarters, sometimes is even a Irrawaddy dolphin ( Orcaella brevirostris ) come here. Other rare species that have been sighted here are types of Loris, leopards and the Bänderlinsang.

This national park is also home to a wide variety of birds, up to 28 species of larger water birds, the White- bellied Sea-Eagle, various types of storks and herons have been observed here.

Environment

The park is ruthlessly exploited in some places, so that even have brought their concerns to express international environmental organizations. Most at risk are the approximately 40 -acre marsh landscapes, in which many shrimp farmers have settled. Due to the outflow channels of the rearing ponds, wetlands are one hand dried up, on the other hand the soil by antibiotics and salt water will be permanently damaged.

The swamp is the largest of its kind in Thailand and is also in the Asian Wetlands Directory of the International Union for Conservation and Natural Resources ( IUCN) listed as worthy of protection.

Visit the park

The Khao Sam Roi Yot Park is located about 320 kilometers south of Bangkok by car, is required on Highway 4 for about four hours. In Amphoe Pranburi you bend from the left, the entrance to the park is approximately 20 km away.

The Phraya Nakhon Cave is about 30 minutes walk away from Bang Pu. From the park bungalows on the beach it's about 20 minutes on a dry, rocky creek uphill and then again 15 minutes steeply down into the cave.
