Kotor Varoš

Kotor Varos ( Serbian Cyrillic Котор Варош ) is a small town in Bosnia and Herzegovina and capital of the homonymous municipality with 22,000 inhabitants. Since 1992 she is part of the Republika Srpska.

History

The modern city developed from the medieval town of Kotor, which was founded in the 16th century settlement Varos ( ungar for " city ").

Geography

Kotor Varos is situated in the valley of the Vrbanja about 35 km southeast of Banja Luka. The 560 km ² area extends at an altitude of 220 m ( north-west ) to 1,739 m ( southeast, Vlasic Mountains ). Around Kotor Varos are other, lower middle mountains: in the north of Uzlomac, in the East Borja, in the west the Čemernica.

Neighboring municipalities are Čelinac, Kneževo, Teslić and Travnik.

Population

At the 1991 census, the municipality of Kotor Varos had 36 853 inhabitants, including

  • Bosniaks: 11,090 ( 30.09 %)
  • Croats: 10,695 ( 29.02 %)
  • Yugoslavs: 745 (2.02 %)
  • Other: 267 (0.73 %)

In the capital lived 10,885 people, including

  • Croats: 5,205 ( 47.82 %)
  • Serbs: 2,735 ( 25.13 %)
  • Bosniaks: 2,256 ( 20.73 %)
  • Yugoslavs: 555 ( 5.10% )
  • Other: 134 (1.23 %)

No ethnic group found the absolute majority of the inhabitants.

Traffic

In the Valley of Vrbanja runs the main road M4 ( Banja Luka -Doboj Teslić ).

Sports

The men's team handball club RK Kotor Varos plays 2008/2009 in the Premijer league. The teams of the football club FK Mladost and the basketball club KK Mladost each play in the ( third-rate ) 2 League of Republika Srpska.
