La Motte-d'Aigues

La Motte- d'Aigues is a commune with 1340 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the Vaucluse department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

La Motte- d'Aigues located in the southeast of the département of Vaucluse around nine kilometers north of the town of Pertuis. Neighboring municipalities are Cabrières- d'Aigues, Sannes, La Tour- d'Aigues, Saint -Martin -de- la- Brasque, Peypin- d'Aigues and Saint -Martin -de- Castillon.

The municipality is located on the southern flank of the Grand Luberon and not part of the Luberon Regional Park. East of the village of 13 km creek flowing Ourgouse long gone, which opens at La Tour- d'Aigues in the Eze. The most important water bodies in the municipal area is the 30 -acre pond Etang de la Bonde in the southwest on the border with Cabrières- d'Aigues.

History

The fortified village, founded in the 11th century, the mid-15th century was as good as extinct until Fouqet d' Agoult, the Baron de La Tour- d'Aigues, the rule acquired and began the repopulation. His efforts were not without success, but only his descendant Louise d' Agoult rescued the abandoned place. A decree of 1505 provided for the settlement of 32 families from neighboring villages and valleys. As in La Motte- d'Aigues also Waldensians had settled, it came in 1545 in the wake of the Waldensian massacre to the destruction of the village by Catholic troops. After the French Revolution, although freedom of religion could be recovered, however, caused a unstoppable depopulation of the decline of the town.

Attractions

The Church of St- Florentin from 1420 was rebuilt in the 19th century and was formerly outside the village. It is now scheduled for Catholic worship, but was temporarily 1560-1620 Protestant.

Today's Protestant church was built in 1904 and designed by architect Payan. Her two previous buildings were demolished by royal order in 1663 and in the 19th century for security reasons.
