Laureus World Sports Awards

The Laureus World Sports Awards are internationally significant awards in the field of sport.

The awards will be presented since 2000, are the founders of the Stuttgart carmaker Daimler (Mercedes- Benz) and the Swiss luxury goods group Richemont ( Mont Blanc, IWC, Cartier ). The statues, which will be presented as a prize, are donated and designed by Cartier.

From the list of proposals ( over 1000 journalists from over 120 countries ) each have six nominations will be compiled. The winners of each category will then be chosen by the Laureus World Sports Academy. This Academy is a circle of "Sports Legends", currently 46 people. The current chairman of the Laureus Academy is Edwin Moses.

Eponym for the price of the Laurus nobilis, of the laurel as a classic symbol of the glory of victory and peace.

Venues

After the venues in Monaco ( Monte Carlo 2000-2003 ) and Portugal ( Lisbon, 2004, Estoril 2005) Spain ( Barcelona 2006 and 2007), the fourth venue for the " Sports Oscars ". 2008 " Laureus " was awarded in the Russian capital Saint Petersburg., 2009, the gala fell out due to the economic crisis, the winners received their trophies in various honors. In March 2010 the Awards were again presented at a gala in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. on March 11, 2013, the gala was held with a view of the football world Cup in 2014 and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. was the 2014 ceremony in Kuala Lumpur instead.

The annual ceremonies stood until 2003 under the patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco. Current patron is King Juan Carlos of Spain.
