List of country-name etymologies

Not too many hot countries abroad as they call themselves. Often, the country names are not written in the Latin alphabet. The Etymological list of country names is a systematic overview and comparison of the country name in English and the local language, whose etymology.

The name " Albania " possibly comes from the pre- Celtic Alb ( "hill" whence comes Alps ) or the Indo-European * albh ( " white ", of which Albion was originally ) back. The Italo - Albanians and the Albanian minorities ( in Greece) have been named differently in the course of time: Arbënuer, Arbënor, Arbëneshë, Arbreshë. There is no doubt that the root alb- or arb older than shqip, from which the modern name of the country ( Shqipëria ) derives.

The Latin Graecia ( the Greek Γραικοί ) actually refers only to the inhabitants of Epirus. Also Ἑλλάς ( Hellas ) or Ἑλλοπία ( Hellopía ) was a tribal name of the inhabitants in the north of Εὔβοια ( Euboea / Evvia ), the Σελλοί ( Selloi ) or short Ἑλλοί ( Helloí ) called themselves.
