Luciana Arrighi

Luciana Arrighi ( born 1940 in Brazil) is an Italian film designer, costume and set designer who also won several other film awards in addition to the Oscar for Best Production Design.

Life

Luciana Arrighi, an older half-sister of French actress Nike Arrighi, began her career as an art director, costume and set designer in the film industry in 1965 with the television documentary series monitor and previously served on the scenic features of forty films.

In 1970, she received her first nomination for a British Academy Film Award ( BAFTA Film Award ) for best art direction in Women in Love (1969 ) by Ken Russell with Alan Bates, Oliver Reed and Glenda Jackson.

In 1979 she won an AFI Award for Best Production Design in My Brilliant Career (My Brilliant Career, 1979) by Gillian Armstrong with Judy Davis, Sam Neill and Wendy Hughes in the lead roles.

In 1982 she was nominated along with Terry Ryan for an AFI Award for Best Costume Design in the Musical Comedy Star Struck ( 1982) by Gillian Armstrong with Jo Kennedy, Ross O'Donovan and Margo Lee.

Together with Ian Whittaker, she won the Academy Award for Best Production Design in Howards End ( 1992) by James Ivory, starring Emma Thompson, Anthony Hopkins and Helena Bonham Carter at the Oscars 1993. In addition, she received another nomination for the BAFTA Film Award for Best Production Design for this movie in 1993. In addition, she won the Silver Ribbon for this movie ( Nastro d' Argento from the Sindacato Nazionale Giornalisti Cinematografici Italiani ( SNGCI ) ) for Best Production Design.

In the next Oscar ceremony 1994 she was with Whittaker for the staged also by James Ivory film What Remains of the Day for the Oscar in this category (1993 ), in which again Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins with James Fox played the lead roles.

For Sense and Sensibility (1995 ) Ang Lee starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant in 1996 she was nominated for a BAFTA Film Award for Best Production Design. In 1997 she won the AFI Award for Best Production Design in Oscar and Lucinda (1997) by Gillian Armstrong with Ralph Fiennes, Cate Blanchett and Ciarán Hinds.

She received with Whitaker 2000, another Oscar nomination, and indeed for Anna and the King ( 1999) by Andy Tennant and starring Jodie Foster, Chow Yun -Fat and Bai Ling For this film, she was with Tom Nursey, John Ralph, Paul Ghirardini and Marc Fisichella also nominated for the Excellence in Production Design Award from the Art Directors Guild. She also received a nomination for the SNGCI Nastro d'Argento for Best Production Design as well as together with Lek Chaiyan Chunsuttiwat, John Ralph and Paul Ghirardani for a Golden Satellite Award for Best Production Design for the film.

In 2003, she won a BAFTA Film Award for Best Production Design in the TV movie Churchill - The Gathering Storm ( 2002) by Richard Loncraine with the main actors Albert Finney, Vanessa Redgrave and Jim Broadbent. At the same time she received in 2003 with Christina Onori and Alessandra Querzola a nomination for an Emmy, and indeed for those produced by HBO TV movie My House in Umbria (2003) by Richard Loncraine with Maggie Smith, Ronnie Barker and Chris Cooper.

For the produced also by HBO television movie Blood, Sweat and Tears (2009) by Thaddeus O'Sullivan with Brendan Gleeson, James D'Arcy and Iain Glen, she was nominated in 2009 by Paul and Ian Whittaker Ghirardani for another Emmy.

She is currently working with director Roland Joffé and the actors Josh Hartnett, Neve Campbell and Claire van der Boom at the scenic features of the romantic action-adventure film, Singularity, to appear 2013.
