Maston E. O'Neal, Jr.

Maston Emmett O'Neal Jr. ( born July 19, 1907 in Bainbridge, Georgia, † January 9, 1990 ) was an American politician. Between 1965 and 1971 he represented the state of Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Maston O'Neal attended the public schools of his home and then the Marion Military Institute. Subsequently, he studied until 1927 at Davidson College in North Carolina. In the meantime, he worked as a high school teacher. After a subsequent study of law and its made ​​in 1930 admitted to the bar he began the Judicial District of Albany to work in his new profession. Between 1941 and 1964, O'Neal was Attorney ( Solicitor General ) in this judicial district. This period was interrupted only by his military deployment in the U.S. Navy during the Second World War. He was used 1944-1946 in the Pacific.

Politically, O'Neal was a member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1964 he was in the second electoral district of Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of J. L. Pilcher on January 3, 1965. After two re- election he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1971 three legislative periods. These were shaped by the events of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement. In 1964 the 24th Amendment was passed in Congress and signed into law.

For the elections of 1970, O'Neal opted not to run again for Congress. After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives, he retired from politics. He died on January 9, 1990 in his birthplace Bainbridge.
