History

The places in the territory of today's Maxhütte- Haidhof in the Upper Palatinate belonged to the Duchy of Pfalz- Neuburg and his Court Lengenfeld. In 1777 they came to the Electorate of Bavaria.

From the rural community Ibenthann the municipality Maxhiitte

The city Maxhütte- Haidhof itself was by renamed the community Ibenthann on April 26, 1938 in Maxhiitte and on 1 February 1956 with the community Meßnerskreith the new community Maxhütte- Haidhof collapsed.

The rural community Ibenthann was formed from the grounds of local villages Ibenthann, Roding and Winkerling with the farms Sauforst, Rohrhof, Strieglhof and Steinhofgründe. As settlements established Maxhiitte, Maxzeche, Luis mine, Bergschenke, gravel house, Neuhaus (now all in the local area Maxhiitte ) Oberstrieglhof, Deglhof, Roßbergeröd and Birkenzell.

Etymology

Sense and meaning of the name Ibenthann is difficult properly to be clarified. The most widely held view is that the name should be associated with the yew tree, since it is believed to know that Louis XIV yew bought from this area as a "German yew wood ". Ibenthann so would consequently of Thann yew, yew was formed of ' Iwa ' or ' Iba '. Etymologically this word origin would be less well explained, since very rarely "egg" to " I" was.

In older documents Ibenthan 1610, 1589 Ybenthan 1538 Uebenthann 1497 Innthan 1437 Ymptann to find.

Another explanation derives from the Old High German word Ibenthann ' impi ' ( Middle High German ' imbe ' and neuhochdeutsch ' Imme ' ), ie bee from. The object orientation ( at the local establishment ) thus formed some or several firs, which were populated by wild bees. The " Haidhof " and the fields " On the Haid " seem to support the assumption.

The simplest and most obvious explanation is the Central State Archive of: " A document of 1437 has the form Ymptann. This form clearly shows the origin of the name: in the Tann or Tann ( imptann ). The letter p like pushing a word between closing and start forming m t.

On April 26, 1938, the name of the municipality is changed and is called from then on to its largest city:

" Place names change. By decree of the Reich Governor in Bavaria from April 26, 1938 Zch. Wd 4/18; 2 was determined that the name of the municipality Ibenthann, county Burglengenfeld, is changed to " Maxhiitte ". "

City formation and incorporations

In 1953, the municipality Maxhiitte became a town. On January 1, 1972, the incorporation of Leonberg and Pirkensee was. On May 1, 1978, the previously independent community Ponholz was ( district of Regensburg ) was dissolved and incorporated their main part of the city Maxhütte- Haidhof.

Pirkensee first appears in 1326 in the Salbüchern. By 1800, the term " foam forest " and " Saumforst " is found first, and then later in 1845, so by the time the first coal research, the term " Sauforst ". The origin of the name " Sauforst " lies in the fact that the forestry between Burglengenfeld and Maxhiitte the view of the festivities Lengenfeld against the hostile threatened East completely disabled so that - similar to the scene of mountains and stones - to secure a show items issued had to be. Place names are analogous origin Schaumburg and sparkling stone.

1835 changed this situation. From the vernacular is narrated that deep trenches were flushed out by a bad thunderstorm in Verau, with a brownish mass has come to the fore. A locksmith from Leonberg, it is further told, have taken the first pieces of coal from this locality to take home to try and see if they are suitable for heating. Near the locality was at that time the property of the " economist " (then name for a farmer ) Birch seer who brought a load of this coal to Amberg and let them investigate on the calorific value. The result was satisfactory and as word spread of the finds in Sauforst rapidly in the coal- poor Bavaria.

Attracted by lignite deposits bought in 1845, Josef Friedrich Fickentscher from Regensburg to superiors Strieglhof. Fickentscher had near Regensburg more sugar goods; at the site of the present freight depot was his sugar factory. From the company of Fickentscher the "Upper Palatinate lignite union Haidhof " developed in the subsequent period and later in the " Bavarian overland Zentrale AG Haidhof "or the " Upper Palatinate works A. G. ". This then branched into the Upper Palatinate lignite Werke GmbH Ponholz " that eventually by the " Upper Palatinate fireclay and Tonwerke GmbH Ponholz "have been superseded.

Churches

In the urban area Maxhiitte there is a Protestant and four Roman Catholic parishes.

Parish of St. Leonhard in Leonberg, Parish of St. Barbara in Maxhiitte, Parish of St. Joseph in Rappenbügl and parish of Christ the King in Pirkensee.

The city parish of St. Barbara

The city parish of St. Barbara went in 1920 from the parish of Leonberg forth. Initiative gave it a small circle of men of the " Church Building Association St. Barbara " founded on 14 November 1920 with the aim in Maxhiitte to build their own Catholic Church and establish a chaplaincy.

After the formalities were fulfilled, the club began in 1921 a true campaign around the center of the planned church building. With a " general national church collection out of turn " was collected in the eight dioceses of Bavaria. Pius XI. made by letter dated December 10, 1923 an amount of 5,000 lire transfer (after " Meyers Lexikon, 14, 1909, coins ", this corresponded to a value of 81,000 dollars). The letter is signed by the apostolic nuncio " Eugene Pacelli ," the later 1939 to 1958 the office of Pontifex as Pius XII. should hold.

Also in 1921 turned to the board of the newly founded association to the Directorate General of Maxhiitte with a request for an unpaid construction site. On a promise of factory management was not to be doubted, and so the church Bauverein a large wooded lot was placed in the west of the growing city.

The great success of the regional church collection, the support of the diocese, the Vatican, the state authorities and the iron and steel industry left to it that already on 19 March 1922, the foundation stone was laid at an official church service, which also includes the then President of the Landtag Privy Dr. Held and various members of the Supervisory Board of Maxhiitte came, could take place.

On 15 July 1923, the Church of Bishop Dr. Anton was consecrated by Henle. Among others, participated in the service of the State Minister of Education and Culture Dr. Matt and the Minister of State for Labour and Social Welfare Oswald part. Now Maxhiitte had indeed its own parish, but was still under the pastoral care of the parish office Leonberg. Then the establishment of a Catholic parish in Maxhiitte was approved by the Ministry of Education and Culture on August 15, 1926, already in Maxhiitte end because as a pastor religion teacher Anton Pronadl was eventually named the first pastor of the industrial community Maxhiitte.

As this parish church for the growing population was slowly too small, decided to build the early 1960s a new parish church. Thus, the ground-breaking ceremony was held with canon Kuffner on July 31, 1960. The Church's consecration received the new parish church on 24 September in 1961 by Bishop Joseph Hiltl and town priest tube Mayer. As a symbolic Thanks bears the street in which the new parish church has its place, in honor of the noble donor in the Vatican - Pius XII. - The name Pacellistrasse.

At the parish currently belong to the parish church of St. Barbara, the Old Parish Church of St Barbara and the Chapel in honor of John the Baptist in Roding.

Evangelical Lutheran Church congregation Maxhütte- Haidhof

" For years, " then in 1887 reported, " the intention was in Maxhiitte for the Catholic and Protestant community, who always lived on the best terms with each other to build a interdenominational church; However, the experiments were abandoned this again and again.

The number of evangelical Christians in Maxhiitte and the surrounding area had grown to over 200 at that time and it took four to six times a year a service in two small classrooms instead. Since the church visitors were divided into two rooms, was only one half of the clergy ever get to see. Each time had the altar - at the same time pulpit - are broken down with great difficulty only on and after the service again.

These unfortunate circumstances led on 16 November 1887, the foundation of the " Evangelical Association in Maxhiitte and environment ", whose goal was the building of a Protestant church in or near Maxhiitte. As of January 1888 was collected for the construction of the temple.

Then, the foundation stone was laid on 12 April 1891. In the May issue 1891 of the " messenger of the Gustav -Adolf -Verein from Thuringia " we find the following excerpt on the occasion of this feast: "Out of the whole environment, the fellow believers flocked together, an old man of 70 years came four hours of a walk hergewandert, also appeared all officials of the Maxhiitte, as ever their inhabitants without distinction of religion. [ ... ] At the end of the celebration of the Sängerbund Maxhiitte Beckers sang immortal men's choir " The little church. "

In July 1891, the available construction funds amounted to about 19,500 marks. Church Funding was secured thereby and by the autumn of the same year was the Gothic brick building, as it is seen today, was completed according to the plans of the architect Lemmers in Munich.
