Mineral County (Nevada)
Mineral County is a county located in the state of Nevada in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hawthorne.
Geography
The county has an area of 9876 square kilometers, of which 146 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lyon County, Churchill County, Nye County, Esmeralda County and Mono County ( California).
History
Mineral County was founded in 1911 from the northwestern part of Esmeralda County. The county derives its name from its natural soil, which is highly mineralized.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 5,071 people in the county. There were 2,197 households and 1,379 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.89 % White, 4.77 % African American, 15.36 % Native American, 0.81 % Asian, 0.10 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 2.68 % from other races groups; 2.39% were descended from two or more races. 8.44% percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,197 households out of which 25.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.20 % were married couples living together, 11.50% had a female householder with no husband. 37.20 % were non-families. 31.60 % of all households and 15.10% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.78 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread out with 24.40 % under the age of 18, 6.20 % from 18 to 24, 22.50% from 25 to 44 years, 27.10% between 45 and 64 years and 19.80% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 101.60 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.30 males.
The median income for a household was $ 32,891, and the median income for a family was $ 39,477. Males have a median income of $ 31,929, women $ 25,262. The per capita income was $ 16,952. 15.20% of the population and 11.00% of families are below the poverty line. 17.70 % of those under age 18 and 10.70% were 65 years or older.
