Eureka County, Nevada

Eureka County is a county located in the state of Nevada in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Eureka.

History

The Eureka County was formed in 1873 from the eastern Lander County after more than 160 kilometers east of Austin, silver was discovered. After complaints from the residents of the new settlement in the vicinity of the mines, Austin was too far away for most of the shops, the new County was founded. It takes its name from the Greek word "Eureka ", which translates as " I have found " means. The administrative headquarters is the 650 inhabitants town Eureka.

Near the western boundary of the district is the small railway and Güterverladestation Beowawe, 1881 with 60 inhabitants at its peak, together with some geysers. 1985, a power plant for utilization of geothermal energy has been built in the vicinity. Eureka County for decades was the scene of fierce fighting between the Land Law Western Shoshone Indians and the U.S. government, especially the two sisters and Rancherinnen Mary and Carrie were for the then famous from Crescent Valley.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the area of the county is 10,826 square kilometers; including 11 square kilometers of water.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 1651 people in the county. There were 666 households, and 440 families. The population density was less than 1 inhabitant per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.28 % White, 0.42 % African American, 1.57 % Native American, 0.79 % Asian, 0.06 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 4.36% from other races groups; 3.51% were descended from two or more races. 9.57 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 666 households out of which 33 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.5 % were married couples living together, 5% were single mothers. 33.9 % were non-families. 29.1% of all households and 9.9% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.08.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 27.8 % under the age of 18, 5.2 % from 18 to 24, 28.6 % between 25 and 44 years, 25.9 % between 45 and 64 years and 12.4% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 106.60 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 113.20 males.

The median income for a household in the 41 417 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family was 49 438 U.S. dollars. Males have a median income of $ 45,167 U.S. dollars, women $ 25,000. The per capita income was 18,629 dollars. 12.6 % of the population and 8.9 % of families are below the poverty line. 11.7 % of those under age 18 and 16.4 % were 65 years or older.
