Elko County, Nevada

Elko County is a county located in the state of Nevada in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Elko.

History

1868 moved the Central Pacific Railroad its tracks through the area and the towns of Elko, Carlin and Wells have emerged. Elko County, the fourth most populous county in the United States, was formed on March 5, 1869 from parts of Lander County. The origin of the name is not clear, an explanation leads him forth from a Native American word that means " white woman " or to "beautiful" mean. Another explanation claims that the railway owner Charles Crocker had by prowling in the area moose ( elk english ) called a railway station by appending a Os Elko.

Geography

The largest part of the county lies in the Great Basin, while drain parts on the north border to the Snake River Basin. It lies at an altitude of 1300 meters on the edge of the salt flats of the Great Salt Lake to 3400 meters in the Ruby Mountains. The Humboldt River has its source in the Elko County and is the main source of water of northern Nevada.

Economy

In the Orange County area is one of the largest gold producing areas in the world, called the Carlin Trend near the town of Carlin (Nevada ) at the Interstate 80 The company Newmont Mining discovered in 1962 gold in this area and opened as operator in 1965 their first gold mine under the name Carlin Gold Mining Company. The Carlin Trend is the most significant gold discovery in North America in the 20th century.

According to the census of 2000, there were 45 291 people in the county. There were 15,638 households, and 11,493 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.04 % White, 0.59 % African American, 5.30 % Native American, 0.68 % Asian, 0.11 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 8.50% from other races groups; 2.78% were descended from two or more races. 19.73 % percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 15,638 households out of which 43.00 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.30 % were married couples living together, 8.40 % had a female householder with no husband. 26.50% were non-families. 20.90% of all households and 4.80% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.85 and the average family size was 3.33 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 32.50 % under the age of 18, 8.80 % from 18 to 24, 31.50% from 25 to 44 years, 21.30 % between 45 and 64 years and 5.90% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 108.80 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 109.40 males.

The median income for a household was $ 48,383, and the median income for a family was $ 52,206. Males have a median income of $ 41,322, women $ 24,653. The per capita income was $ 18,482. 8.90% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. 9.50% of those under age 18 and 7.60 % were 65 years or older.
