History

The foundation of the town Mittelsömmern reaches far back into the mists of history. As early as the Stone Age, the area was inhabited by nomadic tribes, as evidenced by archaeological finds in the immediate local area. However, the actual foundation with a sedentary population took place only in Altthüringerzeit. The place is most probably due to a foundation of Hermunduren ( a Germanic tribe ) back. In Codex Eberhardi the place is mentioned Summa rings, is not exactly clear what is actually meant by the Sömmerdörfer. These references draw several centuries by the history, without ever concretely. It probably served as a global location information to which none needed a further distinction. This changed with the increase of population and the growth of cities, which is a distinction made necessary and was performed for the Sömmerdörfer in the 13th century. The special position Mittelsömmerns also proves the establishment of a Frankish guard station ( in the 1960s by excavations demonstrated). After the decline of the kingdom of Thuringia in the year 531 the first place sank into the darkness of history. The Christianization of the area did not occur until under Frankish rule.

Name development

The name is derived from summer grazing marsh and bog. The term " horn " indicates the nature of the country at that time ( marshy land ). The first spelling of the name " summer grazing " at the beginning of the 8th century was called " Sumaringa ", then " Sumeringen " and 1270 "Some rings ". In 1430, " Sömmeringen " was written. The place " Mittelsömmern " was first mentioned in 1262, but the current spelling " Mittelsömmern " was not published until 1585.

Population Development

  • 2011 - 223

The inhabitants of Mittelsömmern development was characterized in the first years after the Second World War from a relatively strong increase in population, which is due to the displaced evacuees from the former eastern territories of the German Reich. Since the early 1950s there was an almost continuous decline in population. The downward trend slowed in the early 1980s to the present day, in a slight increase can be observed.
