Montopoli in Val d'Arno

Montopoli in Val d' Arno is a municipality with 11,211 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the Province of Pisa in the Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 30 km ². It is located about 45 km west of Florence and 30 km east of Pisa in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, GR 1714 / G. Some districts are located on the Arno.

The districts include Capanne, Castel del Bosco, Marti and San Romano.

The neighboring municipalities are Castelfranco di Sotto, Palaia, Pontedera, San Miniato and Santa Maria a Monte.

History

In Montopoli traces of the Etruscans have been found from the 3rd century BC. After that, the place was probably inhabited by the Romans. In documents, the village was first mentioned in 1017. Until 1162 the town was under the Bishop of Lucca, he was taken from Pisa. 1222 City of Florence was conquered and returned to Lucca, but already taken fifteen years later again of Pisa.
