Mortantsch is a municipality with 2047 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in eastern Styria.

Geography

Mortantsch is located on the outskirts of Weiz in the district of Weiz in the Austrian province of Styria.

Community structure

The municipality comprises the following six localities ( in parentheses population as of 31 October 2011):

  • Göttelsberg (1000)
  • Hafning (191 )
  • Haselbach bei Weiz (164 )
  • Lesko (194 )
  • Mortantsch (185 )
  • Steinberg bei Weiz (274 )

The municipality comprises the cadastral Göttelsberg, Hafning, Haselbach, Lesko, Mortantsch and Steinberg.

History

The current cadastral Göttelsberg was first mentioned as Gotlingsperge in 1185. The name is said to have its origin in the personal names Gotili (s), the acceptance. It was not until 1405 then the Mordensch was mentioned in a document. The next mention of the village of Mortatsch found by Lesko. Lesko was mentioned in 1229 for the first time. The name has its roots in Slavic. Lesko here means hazel.

The Slavonic Namensgut this area dates from the time of the 6th and 7th century, when arrived in the country in the wake of the Avars Slavs. As a result, the Slavs were replaced by the Bavarians. The release took place peacefully. The Slavs and Bavaria lived peacefully side by side and Bayern took over by the Slavs many names and place names. The village Haselbach was first mentioned in 1265 as Haselpach.

In the course of the revolution in 1848 the Untertänigkeitsverhältnis the farmers was dissolved and the farmer was finally the owner of the land. Two years later, the first municipal elections were held.

On 1 January 1952, the 1850 incurred and previously independent local churches Mortantsch, Steinberg were combined at Weiz and Haselbach bei Weiz to church today Mortantsch.

Coat of arms

The award of the municipality coat of arms was made with effect from 1 November 1979. Coat Description: A golden sprinkled with blue water droplets stake in a red shield, front and rear above the other three Golden Horseshoe.

Mayor is Alois Breisler. The council is made up after the elections of 2010 as follows: 9 ÖVP, SPÖ 5, 1 Citizens list Mortantsch

Culture and sights

Leisure

There is an extensive network of trails that can be used for jogging, Nordic walking, cycling and hiking. The village is the starting point for great Haselbach Raabklamm, Götz Unterbichl the starting point for small Raab gorge. Furthermore, there is the opportunity to play tennis and archery.
