Municipalities of Nicaragua

The list of cities in Nicaragua provides an overview of the development of the population of the larger cities and towns in the Central American country Nicaragua.

Urban settlements by population

By far the largest agglomeration in Nicaragua is Managua, with a population of 1,630,031 (as of 1 January 2005). This means that around 30 percent of the country's population is concentrated in the capital region.

In Nicaragua, there are 153 municipalities ( Municipias ). The communities - the largest is Waspan with 9341.71 square kilometers - have partially the surface is smaller German states ( for comparison: Saarland 2568.65 square kilometers). They usually consist of several villages. The administrative area often includes the respective eponymous central, mostly urban settlement, as well as the surrounding Greater Region, so expansive rural areas.

The following table lists the urban settlements over 10,000 inhabitants, the results of the censuses ( VZ ) of 20 April 1971 April 25, 1995 and 28 May 2005, and the overall management unit ( department and Autonomous Region), to which the city belongs listed. The population figures refer to the respective urban settlement in the narrower sense - the geographical area the city - not the city or municipality in the political sense.

The population figures refer to the respective community in its political boundaries, without politically independent suburbs.
