Nicholas Van Dyke (senator)

Nicholas Van Dyke ( born December 20 1770 in New Castle, Delaware, † May 21, 1826 ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Federalist Party), Member of the House of Representatives of the United States and U.S. Senator was.

Life

Nicholas Van Dyke was born on December 20, 1770 in New Castle, the son of Nicholas Van Dyke Sr. and Charlotte Stanley Van Dyke. His father was already an important politician and member of the Continental Congress. Following the example of his father, he graduated in 1788, his studies of law at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1792 and received his license as a lawyer. In 1796 he married Mary Ann Leuvaneigh, with whom he had six children.

Political career

Van Dyke was the first time a member of the House of Representatives for Delaware in the 10th Congress of the United States. Although the legislature had already begun on March 4, 1807 Nicholas Van Dyke was only on October 6, Member of Congress, since he succeeded the retiring James M. Broom. Also in the following Congress he was a member of (4 March 1809-3. March 1811 ). However, since the Federalists represented only a small minority, he was General of the State of Delaware in connection Attorney.
