Nieuwegein

( Listen? / I ) Nieuwegein is a Dutch city of Utrecht and had on 1 January 2013 as declared by the CBS 60 872 inhabitants.

Location

The metropolitan area includes the immediate south of the city of Utrecht. Nieuwegein was formed in the 1970s from the previous towns Vreeswijk and Jutphaas. Vreeswijk is located with its center directly at Lek, one of the Dutch Rhine River. Through the area of Nieuwegein perform several channels: the Amsterdam - Rhine Canal, the Lekkanal and the Merwede Canal. Nieuwegein is located east of the highway A2 ( Utrecht - Den Bosch ), south of the A12 motorway (Utrecht - The Hague / Rotterdam) and west of the A27 ( Hilversum - Utrecht -Ost - Breda ). The city has to achieve not have its own railway connection, but is referred to by the sneltram city railway, which operates almost exclusively on its own rail body in 15 to 20 minutes from Utrecht Central Station.

Economy

In Nieuwegein thousands of commuters who work in the city of Utrecht live; the city was specifically to such an extent in the 1970s, spread as it is now. History

In the 13th century there was a city called Het Gein. This had received a flow customs law by the German Emperor in 1295. In 1333 she fell victim to a civil war and was destroyed. The place Vreeswijk said to have been a Frisian settlement. It had significant locks, which were destroyed in 1481, another civil war and renewed it. The village Jutphaas originated in the Middle Ages along the river Kromme Rijn. It was a not insignificant Schiffer settlement in the 17th century. In May 1940 the city was occupied by the Wehrmacht ( Western campaign against France ); The end of 1944 it was liberated.

As already mentioned, these villages were in 1971 merged to Nieuwegein; between the old cores originated on a modern city center.
