The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova (Romanian Parlamentul Republicii Moldova) is the legislative assembly of the independent Republic of Moldova since 1991. It is the unicameral.

Election procedures

The Moldovan Parliament has 101 deputies who are elected by the voting population every four years. It can take both party lists and individual candidates. Electoral alliances of several parties are no longer allowed for several years. Entitled to seats in Parliament each list that 5% of the total number of votes (up to the elections in April 2009, 6%) overcomes the restrictive clause. The distribution of seats is then performed according to the D' Hondt method.

Competences of the Parliament

One of the first tasks of the Parliament according to one poll includes the election of the president. This has a three-fifths majority of MPs (currently at least 61 votes) can be selected. The President proposes a candidate for the post of head of government. This and convened by him Ministers must be approved by Parliament. Can none of the candidates achieve the necessary majority for the office of President, the incumbent President is obliged to dissolve parliament and to organize new elections. Bills may be introduced into Parliament by MPs or the government.
