Piolet d'Or

The Piolet d'Or (French for Golden Ice Axe ) is probably the most prestigious award for outstanding performance in extreme mountain sports. It is awarded annually since 1991 by the French magazine Montagne Magazine in cooperation with the French extreme Alpinist Association Groupe de Haute Montagne ( GHM ).

Since 2009, an honorary award for lifetime achievement outstanding alpinists will be given. This price bears since 2012 after the first prize winner Walter Bonatti the name Piolet d'Or Lifetime Achievement, Walter Bonatti Award.

The jury will be awarded annually from prominent mountaineers and alpine journalists. Until 1998 was Jean -Claude Marmier, President of GHM, when the award was introduced integral part of any jury.

Having had become loud in the wake of the 2007 award criticism of the procurement mode and the basic idea to evaluate mountaineering services with prices, the award was suspended in 2008. In 2013 there was criticism after the jury, consisting of Stephen Venables, Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, and Silvo Karo Katsutaka Yokoyama distinguished all 17 nominated climbers who were roped in six successful 2012 go.
