Pouilley-Français

Pouilley -Français is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Pouilley -Français is located at 251 m, 14 km west-southwest of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located northeast of Saint -Vit in a depression in the gently undulating countryside between the rivers of Doubs in the south and Ognon ( in the north).

The area of ​​6.08 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the north Doubstals. Passing the part with arable and meadow land, partly with forest landscape shows only slight differences in relief. The area is drained by the village stream and the Ringeard along which runs the eastern border, south to the Doubs. To the north, the municipality's area extends up to a plateau, which forms the watershed between the Doubs and Ognon. With 300 m is reached on the hill northwest of the village is the highest elevation of Pouilley -Français.

Neighboring communities of Pouilley -Français are Corcondray and Villers- Buzon in the north, Dannemarie -sur- Crète the east, and Saint -Vit in the south and west.

History

Is first mentioned Pouilley -Français in 1226 under the name Poylley - Françoys. Over time, the spelling on Poillefrançois ( 1285), Poilley - François ( 1584) and Pouley - François ( 1614) transformed to the present name. In the Middle Ages Pouilley -Français belonged to the cathedral chapter of Besançon. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France.

Attractions

The village church of Pouilley -Français was built in the 18th century. In the old town several farmhouses in the traditional style of the Franche -Comté are from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Population

With 826 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Pouilley -Français is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 264 persons were still counted ), a continuous population growth was recorded since the early 1960s. Since then, the population has about quadrupled.

Economy and infrastructure

Pouilley -Français was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village.
